Why Choose Nakhon Pathom?
Nakhon Pathom is the coolest place you’ve never heard of, but not literally, it’s actually very warm. This small but mighty province is full of culture and history, the perfect place for someone looking for a new adventure.
Only a stone’s throw from the wonderful chaos of Bangkok but still maintaining a chilled and peaceful atmosphere, Nakhon Pathom has it all. There’s plenty to see within the province itself but being in the centre of the country means endless exploration is on the cards when those long weekends or holidays roll around.
Far from the traditional tourist trail, Nakhon Pathom has retained a strong sense of its roots. You really can’t find anywhere better to absorb Thai culture, get to know the locals, eat delicious food and maybe learn some of the language. You can start by visiting Wat Phra Pathom Chedi and Wat Samphran, two famous temples that take your breath away, that are visited by millions of Thais from across the country every year.
However, Nakhon Pathom is very much a modern city with everything you could possibly need. It’s full of friendly locals and adventurous foreigners who could be your new friends, it may be a small province but there aren’t many better places to call home. And if you are craving the beauty and chaos of Bangkok, the mega metropolis is only a short train ride or drive away. But first, let’s explore Nakhon Pathom. Maybe a night out on the town, drinking Thai whisky with the locals? Or a sunset walk through Phutthamonthon Park followed by a delicious dinner with your friends? Whatever lifestyle you choose, you can live it in Nakhon Pathom.
Location and Climate
Nakhon Pathom may be small, but it is in the centre of it all. It’s effectively a suburb of Bangkok without the traffic, and you’d struggle to find a more convenient location in the whole of Thailand. This means you can access the whole of the country, and Southeast Asia, within a matter of hours. A train to Bangkok is the quickest way to get there, taking just over an hour, then hop on a Grab bike taxi to take you to the airport and the adventure continues.
Although Nakhon Pathom cannot claim to have particularly stunning landscapes like other provinces such as the mountainous Phetchabun or Krabi with its beaches and incredible mogotes, Nakhon Pathom is still very beautiful. Generally flat with lots of vegetation, rivers, waterways and incredible wildlife, there is beauty to found there. And it’s even easier to enjoy with the fantastic Thai weather.
With the same three seasons as the rest of the region, Nakhon Pathom welcomes very different and extreme types of weather throughout the year. Rainy, hot and humid during the summer and early autumn months. ‘Cooler’ in winter but still hot during the day, a lot more comfortable in the evenings and at night. And extremely hot during spring, this is your chance to escape to the beach during the longest school holiday.
But regardless of the season, you will rarely need more than a t-shirt and some shorts as you explore all that Nakhon Pathom has to offer. And with it being so close to Bangkok, endless adventures await. All aboard a night train to Chiang Mai, to explore the Northern Thai culture and beautiful mountains. Or head to the airport for a plane down south to the sunny Phuket. Wherever you want to go, Nakhon Pathom is the best place to start.
