Phnom Penh has a tropical climate marked by two distinct seasons; wet and dry. The average annual temperature is 27°C, and the heat is accompanied by high humidity levels.
Geography
Located at the confluence of the the Mekong, Tonle Sap and Bassac Rivers, Phnom Penh and the surrounding province have fertile land. As such, the city is surrounded by agricultural plantations such as rice fields.
Language
Cambodia’s official language is Khmer. It is spoken by the vast majority of Cambodians, along with many dialects. Some people still speak French, though its widespread use was eliminated under the Khmer Rouge.

Situated in the heart of the city, you won’t miss this stunning example of traditional Khmer architecture. The site contains many beautiful buildings of different styles and carries huge cultural significance.
Silver Pagoda
Silver Pagoda
Located within the Royal Palace complex, this beautiful pagoda is well worth a visit. It got its name from its floor, which is covered in 5 tonnes of silver. Inside, you’ll see a collection of Buddhas made from precious metals.
National Museum
National Museum
The National Museum of Phnom Penh offers an excellent insight into the history of the Khmer Empire. The largest in the world of its kind, the museum contains sculptures, ceramics and woodwork that represent Khmer design.
Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum
Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum
This former school building is the memorial site of the S-21 interrogation and detention center used by the Khmer Rouge, one of many sites at which thousands of people were tortured. Today, it preserves and teaches visitors about this tragic period of Cambodian history.
Choeng Ek Killing Fields
Choeng Ek Killing Fields
The Killing Fields offer visitors another chance to understand the impact of the brutal Khmer Rouge rule. The atmosphere here is heart-breaking, as survivors of the genocide relay their own stories on the audio guide as you walk around the different sites.
The Central Market
The Central Market
This striking building houses one of the largest markets in Phnom Penh. Here, vendors sell almost anything you could need, from fresh meat and vegetables, to stationery, household items, sarongs, flowers and second-hand clothes.
